Budget Survey Results Parent & Community Members - Revenue Suggestions


What suggestions do you have to generate District revenue?


  • Work with outside providers
  • Fundraisers
  • The parents are already paying extra for a lot of things. You can’t pass another bond. You could reach out to local businesses to sponsor sports teams AND AP classes.
  • It is important to share with the state government that the school districts (not just ours) of CA need to be fully funded.
  • Apply for more grants.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with companies where they donate to the district.
  • Sell advertising space on electronic billboards, school shirts, yearbooks, buses etc.
  • Can we start with forcing the charter schools (Rocket and CVCHS) the back monies they owe us?
  • What about going to Sacramento and finding out why K-12 schools constantly get left out in the cold when it comes to budget increases?
  • Rent out unused space; space sharing with local organizations; reduce district employees before teachers, extra curricular staff, counselors, or aides; fundraising drive
  • Cooperate sponsorship. They are polluting or students environment, they should pay.
  • Build coalitions with businesses who will be impacted by ballot measures like Schools & Communities First so that businesses are ADVOCATING for such measures. Do the work of building bridges so that individual voters can point to businesses & companies who want to be part of the solution.
  • Lease school facilities during non school hours. Lease parking spaces. Create large gardens at each school to sell produce at local farmers markets or to families.
  • -Provide before and after school programs that parents pay for, these should include free recess time or structured group outdoor games, and also educational fun learning. Such as cooking in Spanish, spanish games etc.
    - provide low cost tutoring
    - provide incentive for middle school or high schoolers to volunteer their time tutoring a subject to elementary student and they get extra credit to raise grade, (and parents pay low cost tutor fee that goes to school).
  • Sell Dent to developers. Move central office to Willow Creek. Create a middle/high school program that students want to flock to. Put it at Pine Hollow and Diablo View.
  • Donations from families and big corporations, knock on doors to big cooperations.
  • Allow for employees to opt out of health benefits if the household currently receives benefits from a spouse
  • Ads for sports/ sports fields.  Parcel Tax.  School board put on sub rotation. Keep at county re: Clayton Valley charter and report violations - engage news stations/organizations on violations.  Trump cut school food restrictions - resell fast food - kids don't get "fat" at school.
  • Besides the typical bonds and parcel taxes?  I would say that some endeavors like civic permits needs work.  Not sure if it's more community development or a revenue stream, but it's a very slow and inefficient response.  It's time to focus on supporting the development of the K-12 students.

More students is more revenue. Better schools raise property values. Higher property values generate more money for school.

  • Recruit more students from the charter schools.  Offer more school choice, so that students who choose to attend charter schools, are given a viable option of a comparable public school.  For example, CV bound students are not going to attend Ygnacio VHS or Concord HS, but they will be more likely to attend Northgate HS.  The same will be true for elementary charter schools.  Find out what the charter schools are doing and offer a similar environment and menu of services.  Increase student attendance by doing serious follow up with those students who are not attending.   Lobby the federal and state government and demand more funding for students with special needs.

  • More time and energy spent on site based grant writing. I’ve tried to assist our site and PTA with small grants only to be met with barrier after barrier. The amount of time and energy spent on auctions, fundraising, etc would be better spent on grant writing. 
  • Offer music for a fee with a district hired employee instead of an independent contractor
  • Fundraisers or crowd sourcing even if just for supplies, "keeping the lights on" at a certain school struggling, reaching out to Bay Area tech companies for grants
  • Get more money from the Lottery funds. Tax payer revenue has been reduced as a direct result of them - get them to pay up and deliver.

  • Every school should require parents to donate money like sequoia does.  At least in that example there is some money for each school to use as they need to. 
  • Higher education taxes, reallocation of funds for less directly impactful programs in local and regional governments. If Concord can find the money to build a giant soccer stadium no one wants then sure there is money that can be found or reallocated so that our schools can have backup generators, full time counselors and nursing staff and after school programs as well as more money for maintaining and improving school grounds. We live in one of the most expensive places in the world to live. Our school districts should be some of the best in the nation if there is that much income to be taxed and to draw from. The system is broken and we all have to agree and work to fix where the money goes so we can build a better community and have better educated students. It’s our MOST important job, to make things better for the next generation.
  • More drives for direct donations to the school, rather than just fundraisers.
  • Improve energy efficiency in the buildings across all schools. If you can reduce your energy use by 30-50% in each building that would be significant savings and its possible.

  • First idea: To generate revenue, possibly doing a community outreach program, not just the surrounding community but a multi-school in the area community. Invite, middle, high schoolers and alumni in the area and surrounding areas, for example doing a Halloween community parade and get together at one school in the area to generate as much funds. Dressing up, costumes, face paint by a volunteer, activities donations by a local store for snacks and drinks. You can do this for most of the holidays; to celebrate the holiday. But do it as 1 big group not several little ones. Have each grade and school help. Second: You can also host a run or walk 5k; that generates funds for the schools in the area. Community members would join in and it's a healthy way to contribute. Third: Do community plays instead of just school ones. If right now is Sleeping Beauty get other schools involved and have them contribute, and more people from the Community will come... Give incentives to coming like a give away.
  • Pass a Bond Measure for the district
  • Demand increased per pupil funding from the state. Work with the community to inspire stakeholders to get involved in the conversation about how we fund schools at a state level.
  • Fundraisers, being in the community for visibility, charging a nominal fee for community service.
  • Attract corporate sponsorship similar to professional sports teams. Otherwise, it comes down to the Parents to either financially donate funds to the school or have more fund raisers.
  • Parcel tax? Promote the educational foundation.
  • Lease existing facilities (paid EV charging in parking lots, lease to Ed-tech startup who want to be close to their customers, etc.), create 'investment opportunities' for parents instead of 'donating to charity' - perks for various investment levels and building personal relationships with 'investors' will encourage more financial engagement. Partnering with tech companies to teach coding in school (Microsoft would love a generation of Bay Area kids to learn how to program in .NET (their priority application framework), Udacity teaches coding by charging companies to have students solve their code problems while simultaneously teaching them code, could be an opportunity for high school students. There are also various educational grants.
  • Many PTO's are willing and able to generate funds for their site to use towards staffing, technology and other programs/projects.  The difficulty is navigating through all the "red tape" .  Projects that should take a couple weeks end up taking a year or more.  Parents and staff spend countless hours following up with M&O, purchasing dept and billing dept.  I suggest implementing a strict policy with M&O to establish a "reasonable" time frame to accept and complete a project and to give the site the authority to use a 3rd party vendor if M&O does not meet this timeline.  Being able to complete projects in a reasonable time frame will encourage parent donations and involvement which in turn will alleviate some financial burden from the district.  Sites can focus on areas that make them successful, parents will feel some sense of ownership/accomplishment  and this should encourage higher enrollment.  Additionally your billing dept needs to streamline it's process.  Our PTO is waiting months, sometimes a year or more, to receive bills for services or staffing.  This make it difficult for the district, site and PTO's to establish accurate budgets and the district is missing out on these funds for an unnecessary amount of time. 
  • Make dollar a day donation mandatory.
  • Reduce overhead- too large of a bureaucracy
  • We are educating students to establish a good workforce for business.  Business tax rates have been dramatically cut on a federal level, there should be some appeal to businesses to help fund the shortfall.
  • Raise the fees on the charter schools. Mandatory volunteering by parents. Bill medi-cal for special Ed Services. Stop hiring private consultants. Stop lining the pockets of the city council.
  • Obviously ADA is where the bulk of the revenue is, so focusing on getting families to understand that students in their seats is a tantamount importance.  Increasing charges for Use Permits to outside agencies and organizations could be considered although raising costs for school-related PTA/PTOs and clubs would be detrimental and should not be considered as a first resort for generating revenue.
  • The elephant in the room lies at the State level and voters need to understand that education is a cornerstone of their community-even if they do not have school-aged children. The public must be persuaded that parcel taxes are an important necessity for the betterment of their community. This is only as good as the fiduciary commitment to ensure such a tax will be well-spent, transparent in its intention, and accountable in its use.

  • As part of a church, I'm wondering if we could create an "Adopt a School" program with local churches to try and raise funds for needed resources. 
  • run private paying camps out of the empty school space during the summer to help cover costs.  Also promote more volunteer opportunities on campus to help with regular maintenance and cleaning at the schools.
  • Maybe hiring a grant writer to bring in more revenue to pay for some positions with grant funding?   A campaign to keep students at district sites instead of losing them to charter therefore generating more ADA funds?  Maybe consolidating campuses to save money on facilities?  Why did district just approve teacher raise if there are no funds??

  • Tax or ask for donations from large corporations in the district like Kaiser , John Muir, central garden and pet, Wells Fargo

  • Revenue is not the answer.  Staff should be held accountable for the work they do and be efficient.  If you work 40 hours a week you should have 40 hours of production.  Increased bond measures are hitting home owners, renters and even business that pay property taxes and pay the most in school bonds already.  Rents for immigrants are through the roof and this is mostly due to all the bond measures.
  • I suppose you could have events such as concerts at the Concord Pavilion or in Walnut Creek whose proceeds go to the district.  Or you could sell products like the Girl Scouts, seasonal stuff like Christmas trees, haloween stuff, 4th of July, etc.
  • Tax homeowners. I don’t know if a special parcel tax, or what, but we seriously need to better fund our schools. I’m onboard with paying more on my County assessment in order to educate our community’s children. They are our future, and they deserve better.

  • If the public school will upgrade their services, will provide better education u will have more enrollment. Make it more appealing by add more days to school and make the breaks shorter.
  • Attract and encourage charter schools in the district, including those with a homeschool option. More and more families are choosing to homeschool because the standard public school model is not what they want for their children. If there are more alternative models that are not private schools, families would be more inclined to enroll their kids in public education, boosting overall student enrollment.

  • This is a stupid question. The only way to increase revenue is increase taxes.
  • Get the funding from the state where it is supposed to come from. We’re paying more in taxes than ever before yet the money is consistently not there for the kids.
  • Fundraising by the PTA or other community organizations.
    Rely more heavily on donations and funds raised by parent associations. Save budget for teachers. Request voluntary donations from families and parents and pursue avenues where corporations can match these donations. Do it in a far more organized and coordinated way to ensure that those that want and are able to give, can do so efficiently.
  • Fundraising events, online sales of school spirit clothes (maybe team with local designers)
  • Divide into smaller school districts so families will be more connected to their schools.
  • Public education should be fully funded by....the public.  Taxes.  Schools should not have to generate revenue!
  • This might sound silly, but wasn't the California Lotto supposed to fill this gap? If feels like we are regularly announcing new winners as California's newest millionaire, but the schools seem to be getting less and less money. Obviously not a solution today, but it really should be evaluated... maybe the money isn't being appropriated correctly. Another idea is to completely have all extracurricular activities funded by the students/families. I'm not a fan of this, my two boys play sports, band, act, etc... but if the option is to loss fundamental education resources, I choose to fund the core academics and let families fund the other stuff. The lesser of the two evils.
  • Become the district of choice, exceeding the expectations of students, parents and faculty.  Create a district charter high school focused on technical education.  Narrowing the strategic focus of the will entail eliminating administrative positions.  Commit to no future bonds without 5 years of balanced budget.
  • Create a website for community donations. This will reach businesses, people without children, and an all around larger demographic.  Increase price of school musicals/plays/concerts.Sell unused assets online or to the community. People with pre-k children would love old library books.  People could buy old art supplies, furniture, etc.Sell advertisement space on the district website. Older grades could provide concerts to a paying public. Rent out high school orchestra.  Rent out musical instruments. Sell advertisements on score boards.  Have a grant writer seek out more grants. Increase prices to athletic/concerts/plays events.
  • If they have a sports field, rent it out on nights and weekends.  Don't just grant use of it for free. 
  • Be clear about where the money goes, specifically via easy to read and easy to access charts.  Nobody wants to read an actual government budget sheet.  Remind the state and local governments that our kids will be the next homeless problem if they focus all their funds on that vs the schools.  Make it known to us tax payers which legislators are voting against school funds. 
  • Demand a cut of the revenue generated by CNWS development and not just via MelloRoos.  Lennar is poised to make huge money and the city of Concord will have a large increase in tax revenue.  The same for that sports complex being proposed by the Concord PD.
  • Lobby the state to get more funds.  All of us in CA pay many taxes to fund the schools and many measures have been passed to fund the schools but there continues to be a budget shortfall.  Perhaps the administrator's salaries need to be cut rather than trying eliminate teachers.
  • Serious  focus  on Corporate sponsorship creation.  Tesoro Refining, Kaiser Permanent, GE, Phillips  and the like need to cough up cash and help educate their future work force.  Do we have anyone making regular LARGE asks of the corporations in our community?   PTA is great but they are small potatoes - Maybe it doesn't need to be a paid staff member but a Volunteer Sponsorship Team.  The Superintendent needs to identify and ask strong voices in the MDUSD family to be a part of it.  If we are not asking corporations persistently  and persuasively we are missing an opportunity.  
  • More focus on community donations. Asking parents/guardians with attending students to donate a minimum dollar amount. School districts in Lafayette as an example do this. One of the reasons why they are rated so highly. In regards to donations, provide specific listing to where donors can allocate their funds to. And then being communicative to the public where we are at in raising money for these items.
  • changing to all LED lighting generates PGE rebate.  Fundraisers for holidays like 2 dollars for a lollipop gram (Valentine’s Day, or st pattys) delivered to student in classroom. Ask your PGE representative for an LIA audit on the schools energy consumption. They will analyze where or what projects will generate rebates and payback over a certain number of years.
  • Squeeze every last dime that is owed by Clayton Valley Charter to the MDUSD out of them.
  • Communicate ways to support our schools through accredited not-for-profit programs or private giving. Communicate to parents, companies, financial advisors who manage charitable giving, and to local businesses - specifically, HOW, where to go online, or what is needed.  I think there are a lot of people who want to support more than our tax dollars provide, but we just don't know how.
  • My company often asks for ideas to support local organizations and charities, and I always suggest private donations to schools.  I've searched and searched for quality non-profit programs that support schools, repairing facilities, teacher grants or training, offering ongoing financial support for essential needs.  And I just can't find any... which is sad.
  • I have found outdated information, overwhelming links that lead no where.  A single, supported giving track is key to getting private donations.  Put a button on your website, and every webpage for the schools, that just says - Donate Now.
  • Do a partnership with Donors Choose or Hands On Bay Area - or create your own not for profit.  Just give us a path - so when my company says they have $10K they want to give to our community, I can give them a website.

  • More fund raisers throughout the community. The WCEF raises money every year to help fund programs and although many schools in MDUSD are not in "wealthy" areas, year round fundraisers can help.
  • More tax money should be allocated to the district instead of other uses; however, I’m not sure any of that is in the district’s control. If enrollment is declining, how about closing campuses? Or transferring unneeded facilities (i.e. any temporary trailer rooms, supplies, staff) between campuses instead of constructing entirely new ones at another campus that needs them.
  • Redistribute our taxes toward education. We pay a *LOT* of property tax to the county, fight for our hard earned tax dollars! It's YOUR job, mine is to pay a hefty fee to live here.
    Impose a tax on private schools, that'd be a political suicide, but worth it!
  • Push for early education, even if it's an investment the district cannot afford in the short term, it saves money for parents who then can maybe afford a 2nd or 3rd child (child care cost is outrageous!). I come from a country where free public schools starts for 3yr old kids from 8:30 to 4:30. High quality higher education is also free, and private colleges/university compete against the free system and pull prices down. I've paid more for my son's pre-school in California than for my entire 5yrs computer engineer degree at a private college! And no, it is not a former USSR republic.
  • As you can see, I'm all for investments into the future, not short term solutions (if there are any, except the easy ones: more taxes or more debts). We'll be rewarded in the long run by more people coming to this district. Innovate! Don't use the old methods, they'va all failed!
  • I'm sorry to say, but the problem here is not in MDUSD's hands: aging population, high cost of living in the bay area, real estate costs, high level of taxation in California (where does it go?), high cost of child care, crazy higher education cost, we're kind of gratified with what we voted for!
    Public school must remain free and high quality, don't punish the students or the teachers.
  • At our previous school district in Michigan, our elementary school was highly successful generating revenue by agreeing to replace multiple product sales fundraisers with a beginning of the school year, one time donation request from families.  (Why not ask community members & alumni via local news outlet advertisements to donate gift certs or $?)  The brochure summarized the amount of time each child spends at school, cost of materials, (teachers' out of pocket expense), etc.  Fundraiser success was highly affected by making it a contest. The back page of the brochure included all options, e.g. monthly charge to account/credit card, one time donation, choice to not make a donation).  Keep in mind public radio fundraisers that repeat the mantra that $5/mo. a.k.a. cost of one Starbucks bev can make such a difference.  Each day, the completed pages were entered in a drawing for prizes, such as a meal with a teacher, limo ride with principal to ice cream store (adjust enticements re: age range such as hair/makeup/manicure/sport gift certs, snack bar coupons/freebies, unique/student designed logowear, passes to turn in homework a day later, etc).  Announcements of the daily winners were made via the intercom to keep up the spirit.  FYI - A substantial decline in involvement occurred when new administration kept the fundraiser fairly quiet and only distributed the brochures.
  • Increase property taxes in return for pension reform. 
  • Consider introducing a bond measure.
  • Explore local partnerships to fund extracurricalular activities such as the local oil companies, partnerships with Saint Mary's College and CSU EB for educational training and consulting purposes.
  • Take contributions/donations from the community.  Put a list up online of materials the community can donate to you and the location it is needed (printer paper, pens, pencils, paper towels, colored paper etc).
  • Purpose local tax increase for education, donations and gifts from parents and local or chain businesses
  • I live in the Clayton Valley High School attendance area. As a parent of three kids, and a teacher in MDUSD, I have massive concerns about Clayton Valley Charter High School. I WILL NOT send any of my children to that school, and I am prepared to make whatever sacrifices are necessary to get my children to another high school in the district. Unfortunately, many families in my community do not want to send their children to CVCHS, but because of transportation issues, feel that they have no choice. I hear many parents say that they just can't get their kids to other district schools given their commutes, etc. If our budget shortfalls in this district are due to declining enrollment, this seems like place to start. Before busing was cut prior to the 2008 recession, I paid (I think $600 a year?) to have my oldest child bused to and from her elementary school from our neighborhood. Parents in my community would be willing to pay that to get their students to Concord, Northgate, or Ygnacio Valley. The district should promote the IB program at YV and offer busing services from Pine Hollow Middle, Diablo View Middle, and Ayers Elementary to the nearest high schools mentioned above. The bus going to YV could also make drop offs at Northgate. Due to traffic and transportation issues, families living in my community do not really have a "choice." They are forced to go to the local school, which offers a worse curriculum. There are indications that whatever they did to "clean up their act" prior to the charter renewal is already starting to fall apart. They have lost long-time management last week, Mr. Scheible, who was touted as the antithesis of Dave Linzey because he was on campus more often, is no longer present as often, and I am hearing that many other staff members are leaving. Massive turnover is on the horizon again. I think the district would be wise to consider all attempts to retain the middle school students in our area.
  • I am new to the school district, but do we have a district wide group like concord partners in education that can help raise funds? Coming from the Dublin community, I know they had Dublin Partners in Education that assisted the school district.

    Long term - get more dedicated state funding on fixed basis, vs. student dependant

  • Improve the quality of the teaching experience so less people want to home school and to stop families trying to move out of the school district to better school districts. Lamorinda springs to mind.

  • Hold suggested donations to the district with tax writeoff opportunities for home owners, Have a monthly bake sale and all the monies go to the school where the sale is being held. Do a class project once every spring for a community car wash and all the money goes to the school. This will teach children the value of hard work and it will benefit the school. Kids tend to be lazy in this generation 
  • More fundraisers? Rent property to non-school activities if they make sense? Can we create/submit a proposition for a tax to generate revenue? 
  • Increase attendance compliance through supportive services to families in need.

  • Think about sponsorship support for things like athletics and performing arts across the district. What are things that all schools do where outside companies would subsidize to be the exclusive provider of something. Parents do not want to send more resources to the district- they want that control at the school level.

    - Improve MDUSD quality of education and parent engagement so that parents don't feel they have to pull their kids out to a private or charter school that can meet their needs - BE RESPONSIVE TO PARENTS!
  • Donation drives for specific changes / improvements / growth (donations are anonymous). Make sure the donation process delivers a great experience (great presentation, great software, great results).

  • improve the culture and quality of the mdusd campuses and classrooms.  i see alot of bad kids going to mdusd and are not properly disiplined.  I believe this creates a situation where you have many parents looking elsewhere to bring their kids.  the mdusd is not a daycare and i believe it has ended up this way on many schools in the district.  the families like myself are looking for alterinative solutions for schooling.  improve discipline.  plain and simple: have a lower tolerance for bad behavior and and higher disciplinary actions for kids who abuse the rules.

There are limited resources for him at the public school.  If he attended 7 Hills I could hire a math specialist, who rents out space, to help my child.  How they do this is that the specialist rents space and makes payment arrangements with the parents directly.  Then during the appointed math time the child will go to their rented space and do math with the tutor in lieu of their class.  This would be great not only for children falling behind, but those who need an extra challenge.  Revenue would be generated not only by renting space but perhaps a percentage of income goes back to the school.

Take advantage of the brilliant wealth of the crowd that we have immediate access to here in the Bay Area. And make them ashamed for not helping already!

Right now a big part is going to the general fund thus not benefiting students directly.  Stop buying double set of text books. No one uses them at home, just give students online access instead. Go to a shorter school year to shorten number of days in classes.
  • Each school does fundraising activities. Maybe have a member of staff to do this more centrally as some schools are better at raising money than others.
  • Not sure what’s possible but maybe parents can help schools and teachers apply for grants. What about a program where parents from the wealthier schools that have less need are trained to volunteer in schools that have more need. Maybe parents who have had success with fundraising and parent involvement could volunteer some time and ideas to school who haven’t had success in that area.
  • I recommend a per "door key" type property tax.  I think this would be the fairest in that it would hit each house or apartment equally.  Since apartment dwellers are usually younger families with kids they can fairly pay their share. Thus not penalizing an older empty nester couple with a more expensive house.

  • I would be in favor of a limited tax (sunsets in <10 years) for necessary repairs and upgrades. I can't get behind 30 year taxes and bonds due to their high payback costs. These should be limited measures while longer term plans are developed to shore up the financial situation.

  • My understanding is that our RE Taxes are used to fund school districts.  My understanding is also that apartment dwellers do not contribute to school district funding.  If this understanding is true, and if many students live with families in apartments, it would be great if those families could be taxed in some way to assist in educational support for public schools.  It would appear that families who own homes are funding not only home-dwelling students but apartment-dwelling students, thus generating income that is more limited than the expenses of the school district.

  • Hmmm...how about a property tax? I know an attempt was being made in the past, and it failed. It failed because MDUSD still has a bad reputation and home owners feel the money they would pay would not be spend at their school, and they don't have control how and where it is being spent. Still, a property tax would be worth a try if you lay out clearly how and where the money is being spent. For example, my kids go to Northgate, but I would love to support the Spanish program at Bancroft - I hear great things about it. Same about the international baccalaureate program at Ygnacio Valley. It would have to be a convincing campaign picking out the highlights of MDUSD schools (and hopefully you won't fire the people who are driving those highlights once you start making cuts).
    I think you also have to hope that the PTAs and PFCs pick up some of the slack. But, from what I've seen at my schools, you upset them quite a bit by bumping long term employees who really poured their heart and soul into their school and replacing them with people who have seniority but clearly don't care. Again...the unions are dictating what you are doing, and your HR department did a horrible job communicating all the changes to employees, schools, parents. So maybe give the schools more power of decision over the employees which are being paid by the PTAs.

  • It seems to me that if we declutter what we already have we would be in a better place in the long run. I've been a parent in this district for 7 years and it seems like the schools are pushing too much "un" work and "un" useful events in the name of school spirit which cost parents a lot of money. I'm all for school spirit and a good time but if we want to fix some of the educational issues and find extra money, parents including the PTA, would have more time and money to spend on what really matters. Our kids and their education. I've pulled out my 7th grader this last fall and I know many other parents who are doing or have done the same thing. I still have two younger children remaining in the district but I'm hoping to get them homeschooled before too long. Decisions like these must be effecting the financial state of the district.

Somethings that we did to raise money were bake sales, telegrams to friends for Christmas, Valentines Day, Thanksgiving, etc.  $1.50 to send a fellow student, teacher, other staff a special telegram. Even parents were able to send telegrams.

Generate school or district specific muni-bonds that only parents in the school district can purchase: in case of default, state budget for a particular defaulted school will go to the bond holders to make them whole (note: without the triple tax break, this bond type is not advisable)

  • There is already a constant fundraiser and/or asking parents for donations and there's a limit to how much you're going to get from that which is probably already passed.  "Revenue" is only going to come from removing waste (administration) or increased government funds (unlikely).  Waste does not include teachers ( causing larger class rooms), school supplies (causing out of pocket for teachers and parents), activities (causes lack of interest in school for children) or other things directly benefiting the children's education and experience in school.

  • Here is an idea.  Years ago I went to a fundraiser put on by the Petaluma Unified School distinct.  It was a huge concert with a high profile well known artist that did the concert at no cost.  Why doesn't our district use the concord pavilion for an annual event to raise money for something that would otherwise be cut.  I remember speaking with the event coordinators at the time and they make a lot of money to support school programs.  It would  be a way to provide equity to all students.

  • Hire competent people to increase transparency and be responsive to parents and the community, which will build public trust.  This survey is the perfect example of why there is so little trust and confidence in MDUSD.  A high-school student or college intern could have developed a more comprehensive survey that would be more than 3 open-ended questions.  Not only is this more difficult to analyze, certain individuals will not respond, and I seriously wonder how thoroughly my well-thought out response will be reviewed and my comments considered.  Is this survey a token gesture or genuine?  I can only hope the latter.  My point being, when this is the effort MDUSD puts forth, how can the community and parents trust in MDUSD's ability to plan thoughtfully for the future.

  • Consider how schools in Springfield VA might have excellent funding yet the housing prices are vastly lower than the Walnut Creek area where schools can't even afford teaching staff for arts, gym, and additional assistance. How can housing be more than a million dollars and the schools are funded so poorly? It seems pretty obvious the entire structure of our funding needs to be revised. No need to reinvent the wheel, just look at how the successful schools are doing it in other states.

  • Facility rentals - Improve some of your facilities to generate more monies via summer camps and summer programming at school.  low cost high volume with additional income for teachers to oversee these programs.  You have a wide array of facilities that are being underutilized.  The summer camp market is a multi million dollar industry. The average day camp is $300-$400 for one week of a specific sport or activity.  Either contract out facilities at less of a cost to camps out there who are paying more through towns or create your own in house program that will create a community spot for the kids and additional income for your staff.  2000 kids x $200 per kid = $400,000.  I assume you would not charge yourself for facilities and this would be less than any other 9-3 program out there. You already possess the marketing based and I am sure there are 50+ facilities through MDUSD so you would need 40 kids per site during one summer to make this happen

  • 1. Offer space to be rented. I offer educational workshops to teachers, administrators, and mental health clinicians, and I'm always looking for nearby rental spaces (I have free space I can use, but it's not as close to home, so I'd love a low-cost, nearby option).
    2. Figure out what internal expertise you have in the district. Create an online PD learning option, and then market to other districts.
    3. See my recommendation above about partnering with universities on research. On the major research grants I've worked on, sometimes districts get significant funds to participate.

  • It seems like most of the declines in enrollment are caused by policies that originate at the state level, rather than at the district level. It's unfortunate that the district (and our children) have to pay the price. The major solution would be to increase parental awareness in order to lobby for more inclusive state policies such as...relax the vaccine policy and allow personal belief exemptions, get rid of controversial comprehensive sex Ed programs especially in K-12, and get back to teaching the basics. Parents unified within mdusd could put some serious pressure on Steven Glazer to make changes.
  • The state needs a new funding model that more accurately funds school districts (unclear how to lobby the state, however). Also, put focus on student enrollment in spring when making staffing changes. When teachers are let go in spring, and then enrollment necessitates hiring more teachers at that same site in fall, the teachers that do get hired are often not strong and create more problems than they solve.

  • It is frustrating that a few years ago there was why seemed to be a surplus of money and the school bought things like umbrellas for tables and buddy benches and now people will be losing their jobs and programs will be impacted.  I have been on site counsel for many years at my kids primary and secondary schools and it is hard for me to understand why so much money was mismanaged.  I know that doesn’t help now but maybe some thoughts about that could help to avoid future circumstances such as this.  I did not know that a school district could have revenue streams beyond government funding, if that is possible then maybe schools could rent out their facilities and rooms and such to small businesses after hours.  MPR’s could be used for privately run Zumba classes or partner dance classes.  Maybe other spaces could be rented as well.  Help keep the process simple and walk them through it.  I’ve run Girl Scout events through school and the process is off putting and somewhat confusing so making that easier and more readily available you may get more takers.  How else could you rent or use the facilities?  Maybe in summer time offer them up for event space.
  • Community outreach to more businesses (especially large corporations whose property taxes aren’t really contributing to the fund that’s to prop 13). If they aren’t going to pay taxes perhaps we can guilt them into some monetary donations. 
  • What about some sort of "mega PTA", whether at the district level. Or, some sort of training blitz to get a robust PTA going at every district school, if it's not already successful. The mega or school-wide PTA(s) then work collaboratively to fundraise dollars back to pay for some things that had been lost to budget cuts.
  • Parents donate stuff  that no longer need to be sold at the school (kind of a large garage sale)
  • Seek to sell excess school property (e.g. Glenbrook Middle School site) for other use.

  • Increase melrose tax from $67 (I believe to)  to $150 per year.

    Offer more of an incentive to teachers close to retirement. $1000 is ridiculous!

  • Developed more programs to have better students  and organize more activities that help to get more money.
  • Tap into education foundations and PTA/PTO/PTG. Look at going out for more bonds.
  • fundraise, need more transparency regarding budgets so people know exactly where their funds are going to.
  • Partner with local industries who need skilled workers.  Chevron, refineries, Kaiser, Sutter Medical, John Muir, Genentech, etc.
  • Hire a fundraising professional. Meet with the governor and request funds be released from the rainy day fund to support the district.
  • Increase taxes; Amazon pays its fair share in taxes
  • Like school sites are told, find your revenue source. Be resourceful! Brand some of the stadiums/fields, dedicate a library for naming rights donation (i.e. The Salesforce Library etc). Have a district wide auction gala, a big education fund run, charge for summer school for students taking courses for advancement (not to retake a failed course), some of the same ways you have individual sites raising money. Merge with another shrinking district and sell or lease some of the properties, or create a music charter school, theater, school for the trades,  and if all else fails trim some of the ridiculously high admin salaries!
  • More community based events and fundraising that involves neighbors of the schools, past/current/future families, local businesses, etc.
  • Raise funds by having a Dunk Tank day for administrators.

  • 1) Consolidate high schools AND generate new capital by closing Ygnacio Valley HS and selling the campus to De La Salle and Carondelet.
    2) Establish new public/private partnerships for local businesses and organizations to use school facilities in the evenings and summer and/or sub-lease parts of campus facilities to local private schools.
    3) Sell corporate sponsorships for naming rights to high profile district programs and facilities.
  • Teach people how to give their house to their local school when they die ... create a legacy giving program similar to major universities
  • Sell real estate from underperforming schools.
  • Have businesses sponsor lunches, lobby grant money for special education funds, get bond passed, if attendance equals money - figure out how to get more kids to the district schools. Why are they leaving?  Solve for that. Offer some online courses to boost attendance,
  • Market and pass local parcel tax increases and bonds to mitigate the impact of Prop 13 and other parcel tax ‘relief’ programs that have bled the State’s once world class school system since 1973.

  • More cooperate/community sponsors for specialty programs. Ask parents for more classroom supplies.
  • You are already receiving enough revenue. Stop wasting money on unneeded schools and more importantly you wasted huge amounts of our money on interest for 40 year bonds where you cost us 5.5 times the face value. We do not trust you.
  • The district should allow the day care centers to expand on school campuses. That could increase revenue from rent the district charges these centers.
  • Property taxes. However, I’ve heard that has not been approved in the past when voted on from the   entire county. Breaking up the district may result in smaller voting areas approving tax increases for their neighborhoods. Or even tracking the dollars brought in by neighborhood and spent proportionately on those schools.

  • Form Educational Foundation; so much effort seems to get put into fundraising at individual schools.  Could all that effort be funneled into one foundaion that doles out money, as apporpriate?

  • Rent out classrooms for adult education/night school. Hold more fundraising events outside of school and inform the general public of them. Parents can make optional donations to make signs or flyers to put around town (with the cities permission and the agreement that all flyers will be removed by parents who put them up or other volunteers).
  • The state should tax large businesses in order to find education. It’s unbelievable that this happens in other states but not in California.
  • Reach out to local businesses.  I work for a Union Hall and we are always supporting non profits and schools with various events, when the opportunity arises.  Unions are a great way to start. 
  • I am unsure how students and their families earn money for the state sponsored schools.
  • More fundraising events , ie: talent show,  cookie sales, rummage sale.
  • No idea, but I am willing to listen to possible options and attend meetings and find ways to promote them, if they seem like they would work. (For example, another parent mentioned to me that I should learn more about the Schools and Community First Initiative, which proposes to seek reforms on how commercial real estate is assessed--finding ways to prevent large commercial real estate owners from using tax loopholes. However, I ask that the school district find ways to provide informational meetings at different times and places (not just in the evenings), so that community members with different scheduling demands can attend.
  • Can we rent out our buildings for parties or events? Can we have advertisements on school buses?
  • Participate in Terracycle Recylcing programs across multiple products to earn money for recycling. 
  • It appears that there is plenty of schools in our district to cover all of the current student headcount. If you close a school then you are paying for less salaries, monies to operate the school and for school supplies for the staff and students at the school. The property perhaps could be sold off as well as the furniture, or the furniture can be transferred to other schools so that they do not have to buy more furniture; saving money. If the schools that children are transferred to have too great a teacher to student ratio, then hire "as needed" the teachers from the closing school, or elsewhere to add the necessary classes. If there is a shortage of classrooms, look at bringing in prefabricated buildings to house the additional units.  Monies to purchase/rent the prefabricated buildings can be purchased/rented via the proceeds of the sale of the former school property.
  • In addition "if" the students transfer from a school closing that has a low California "Great School" rating, to a higher performing school, then I am sure that the rankings of that school could only increase. Being surrounded by peers that are performing well only encourages others to do the same. I don't think that parents would mind driving a bit further to take their kids to a higher performing school. 
  •  More higher ranking schools will bring more people to want to live in Concord, thus increasing the tax revenue as a whole for the city.  Lots of benefits not only for the district, but for the students and town. 
  • In addition a review of where the money has been allocated should be performed.  For example (if applicable) bonuses, district paid for cell, district vehicles, programs that aren't being utilized, etc. 
  • There needs to be an all out effort for parents and teachers to support overturning prop 13 for corporations. An MDUSD action committee.
  • Parents should pay a fee for school/classroom supplies
  • Charge a nominal fee for field trips.
  • Hire someone to advocate for school funding full time and lobby local, state and government officials HARD!
  • Grants, look for grants. Partner with big companies to sponsor schools.
