Transition to By-Trustee Elections

Overview

The Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) currently elects the members of its Board of Education through an at-large election system. Under this system, candidates for the Board may reside anywhere within the District’s boundary and are elected by the registered voters who also reside within this boundary.

In accordance with the California Voting Rights Act, the District is transitioning to a by-trustee election system, in which the District’s area of service is divided into trustee areas or districts. Voters in each of these trustee areas then elect their Board of Education representative, who must also reside in the respective trustee area.

The process timeline includes a series of public hearings to receive community input on the criteria to be used in preparing trustee area maps.  Additional hearings will be held once draft maps are prepared, allowing the community to provide additional input. A primary goal when drawing trustee election districts is to draw boundary lines that keep neighborhoods and/or clusters of neighborhoods together, which is why input from the community is essential. As dates and locations for these hearings are finalized, the timeline below will be updated.

As draft maps are created, they will be added to this website.
