Academic Support/Professional Development Grants

 

American Honda Foundation Grants 

Purpose:  To support youth education with a specific focus on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects in addition to the environment, job training and literacy.

Funder: The American Honda Foundation.

Applicant:  Nonprofit charitable organizations classified as a 501(c)(3) public charity by the Internal Revenue Service, or a public school district, private/public elementary and secondary schools as listed by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Amount: Grants range from $20,000 to $75,000.

Toshiba American Foundation (TAF) Grants for Grades 6-12 

Purpose: To provide teachers with additional funds to support classroom projects.  After-school, summer projects, and independent study projects are not eligible.  The Foundation strongly encourages projects planned and led by individual teachers or teams of teachers for their own

classrooms.  Many successful grantees have designed projects that tap into the natural curiosity of their students, enable students to frame their own scientific questions, and incorporate the expertise of community partners.  Grants are to support classroom science and math education.  Endorsement from a school official is required.

Funder: The Toshiba America Foundation.

Applicant: Science and math teachers in public or private schools.

Amount: Grants requests of more than $5,000.

Deadline:   August 1st and February 1st annually.

2019 Knowles Teaching Fellows Program  NEW!          

Purpose: To support early-career high school mathematics and science teachers in their efforts to develop teaching expertise and lead from the classroom.

Funder:  The Knowles Teacher Initiative. (formerly the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation.)

Applicant:  Early-career, secondary science and mathematics teachers.

Amount: Fellows receive access to a comprehensive suite of benefits that are valued at approximately $150,000, including stipends, grants for professional development, classroom materials and National Board Certification, mentoring from veteran teachers and teacher educators, support for teacher-led initiatives, and membership in a nationwide community of more than 300 science and math teachers.

Shell Science Teaching Award  NEW!          

Purpose: To recognize one outstanding classroom teacher who has had a positive impact on his students, school and the community through exemplary science teaching.  Special projects may be mentioned, but should not be the main focus of the candidate’s application.  The judging panel will review the nomination packets and select 10 finalists.  These individuals will then be asked to provide a YouTube video of no longer than 30 minutes that features classroom activities with students that clearly reflects the candidate’s teaching philosophy and application submission.  The classroom is defined as indoor or outdoor – wherever the candidate teaches science.  The video will be due in mid-January.

Funder:  The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and Shell Oil Company.

Applicant:  K-12 classroom science teachers.  Nominees must be classroom teachers who responsibilities include teaching science, and they must have a minimum of eight years of experience (not including the current school year) as a teacher of science and must teach in a private or public school.

Amount: Winner receives $10,000.  In addition, the recipient and the two finalists each receive an all-expense-paid trip to attend the NSTA National Conference on Science Education.  Ten semifinalists will receive certificates of distinction.

Assistance for Arts Education Development & Dissemination(AAEDD) 

Purpose: To promote arts education for students, including disadvantaged students and students who are children with disabilities.  The AAEDD program specifically supports the development and dissemination of accessible instructional materials and arts-based educational programming.

Funder:  United States Department of Education.

Applicant: Local education agencies or consortium of LEAs.

Amount: Varies - $525,000 to $625,000.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Our Town, FY 2019 Grants       

Purpose: To support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthens communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes.  Our Town offers support for:

     Place-based projects – Through arts engagement, cultural planning, design, and/or artist and creative industry support, these projects contribute to improved quality of life in local communities.  These projects require a partnership between a nonprofit organization and a local government entity.

     Knowledge building projects – These projects build knowledge about how to leverage arts, culture, and design as mechanisms for strengthening communities.  These grants are available to arts or design service organizations, and other national or regional membership or university-based organizations.

Funder: NEA.

Applicant: Independent school districts, institutions of higher education, Native American tribal governments, nonprofit organizations and city, township, county, state and special district governments.

Amount: Grants range between $25,000 and $200,000.

National Young Arts Foundation Competition  NEW!  

Purpose: To recognize youths for their accomplishments in cinematic arts, classical music, dance, design arts, jazz, photography, theater, visual arts, voice and writing.

Funder:  The National Young Arts Foundation.

Applicant: United States citizens in grades 10-12 or ages 15-18 by December 1, 2018.

Amount: Cash awards up to $10,000, an alternative to scholarship that can be spent any way you see fit; take classes with accomplished artists in your field; become eligible for nomination as a United States Presidential Scholar in the Arts; receive a lifetime of mentoring and professional support with a rich network of peers; and connect to educational and artistic development opportunities.

2018 John Morton Excellence in the Teaching of Economics Awards     

Purpose:  To promote excellence in economic education at the K-12 level by honoring inspirational teachers whose innovative teaching concepts improve and stimulate economic understanding in and out of their classrooms and achieve results.

Funder: The Council for Economic Education.

Applicant: Current K-12 teachers from public, private or parochial schools. 

Amount: Awardees receive $1,000 cash and all expenses related to transportation, hotel accommodations, and conference registration to attend the 57th Annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference in Atlanta on Oct 5-6.

Deadline: June 29, 2018.

The Sharon Gewirtz Kids to Concerts Fund     

Purpose: To support string education by inspiring middle school string students thru direct experience with accomplished classical musicians.  Mentoring programs and high-level concert experiences are two examples. Priority will be given to well-designed projects that provide a comprehensive immersion into or guidance from the musical talents of advanced musicians.  String education must be a key component of any music program requesting funds.  Schools and programs must already have an existing music program/curriculum in place. 

Funder: The Sharon Gewirtz Kids to Concerts Fund.

Applicant: Public or charter schools or non-profit/501(c)(3) programs directly funding string education, serving grades 5-8, regardless of their ability to pay, should apply.

Amount: Grants up to $1,000.

Wines ‘Til Sold Out Scholarship Program 

Purpose: The scholarship program seeks to reward five students who produce the most thought-provoking answers to the question:  What can be done to establish and maintain strong relationships with customers in the digital age?

Funder: Wines ‘Til Sold Out.

Applicant: Any students who are entering or currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program for the 2018-19 school year in the United States. 

Amount: Five $5,000 scholarships will be awarded.

Classics for Kids Foundation Matching Grants for Stringed Instruments 

Purpose: To enhance school and community youth music programs in need by providing matching grants for new, high-quality stringed instruments such as violins, violas, and cellos.  Funder: Classics for Kids Foundation

Applicant: Public, private, or charter schools serving grades K-12.

Amount: Grants vary based on the number of instruments requested.  A proposed grant of $5,750 (to be matched dollar for dollar) would purchase 20 stringed instruments.  (12 violins and 8 cellos)

Deadline: Applications are accepted quarterly, with deadlines June 30, September 30, December 31 and March 31 annually.

2016 Baseball Tomorrow Fund (BTF) Grants  

Purpose:   To promote and enhance youth participation in baseball and softball and to address the unique needs of each community.  Grants are intended to provide funding for incremental programming and facilities for youth baseball and softball programs, not for normal operating expenses or as a substitute for existing funding or fundraising activities.  The funds may be used to finance a new program, expand or improve an existing program, undertake a new collaborative effort, or obtain facilities or necessary equipment.

Funder: Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Applicant: Tax-exempt organizations (i.e. municipalities, school districts) and 501(c)(3) organizations involved in youth baseball and/or softball.

Amount: The amount varies by project, but the average grant amount is approximately $40,000.  BTF carefully considers the case and in-kind funding that has been secured and committed toward a project.  Generally, at least 50% of the total cost of the project should be committed by other sources of funding; however, the higher the ratio of matching funds, the better chance the application will be successful.

The Rite Aid Foundation 

Purpose: To support and fund programs that focus on health and wellness in the communities in which Rite Aid operates.  To help people in the community Rite Aid serves lead happier, healthier lives.

Funder: The Rite Aid Foundation

Applicant: Nonprofit organizations.

Amount: Varies.

Deadline:  July 1 and October 1.  The committee reviews proposals as soon as possible after the deadline.  The goal is to review and respond to all correctly submitted applications within 60 to 90 days of arrival in their office.

Family Travel Forum Teen Travel Writing Scholarship 2017  NEW!

Purpose: To encourage teens to share travel experiences in words and images.  Entrants are asked to submit travel blogs that are serious, funny, or contemplative, as long as they are informative. 

Funder:  The Family Travel Forum and the Society of American Travel Writers.

Applicant: Applicants must be aged 13-18 and attending grades 8-12.  Applicants must be attending junior high or high school in the United States or Canada or an American international school abroad, or be enrolled in a U.S. homeschool program.

Amount: Awards range from honorable mention to $1,000 scholarships and prizes.

Kinder Morgan Foundation Grants   

Purpose: To help today’s science, math and music students become the engineers, educators and musicians who will support our diverse communities for many years to come.  To accomplish this goal, we fund programs that promote the academic and artistic interests of young people in the many cities and towns across North America where Kinder Morgan operates.  This grant is for program support only.  The focus areas are:  academic programs, including tutoring and arts education programs.

Funder:  The Kinder Morgan Foundation.

Applicant:  K-12 public and private schools and nonprofit organizations in the United States with a 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service.  Schools must be in an area where Kinder Morgan has operations and they do have a facility in Concord. 

Amount: Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Deadline: July 10, 2018.  The deadlines are the 10th of every other month beginning in January.  Applications postmarked on or before a deadline will be accepted.  You will be notified of the board’s decision 60 to 90 days after it is received.

The Robert J. Stevenson Scholarship  NEW!     

Purpose:  To assist a classroom teacher working toward an advanced degree to enhance teacher leadership skills through the study of teaching.  Applicants taking coursework leading to National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certification are encouraged to apply, as are those engaged in the study of curriculum and instruction and/or supervision.  This is an unrestricted award. The award may be used for tuition, books or other education expenses. There is an expectation that the recipient will report back to the Leadership Foundation for Teacher Education Council on how the award was used. 

Funder: The Leadership Foundation for Teacher Education (LFTE) of the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) and the Stevenson Family.

Applicant: Eligible applicants must be an ATE member, a full or part-time graduate student; and have a GPA of 3.0. (out of 4.0)

Amount: One scholarship of $1,200 is awarded.

James Patterson & Scholastic Book Clubs Giveaway   

Purpose:  To get books into the hands of as many kids in as many places as possible and it is known that, for many children, access to quality books begins with (and too often is limited to) what their teachers can offer them in the classroom.  To enter, applicants are asked to write a short response to the prompt:  “Here’s how I would use $500 and 500 bonus points for our classroom library.” 

Funder: Author James Patterson and Scholastic, Inc.

Applicant: Current PreK-12 teachers in a United States School.  Must be current legal resident of the United States.

Amount: 4,000 teachers will win $500 and 500 Scholastic Book Clubs bonus points for their classroom libraries

Carl Gellert & Celia Berta Gellert Foundation Grants  NEW! 

Purpose: To provide support for educational institutions, social services for the homeless, affordable low-income housing, and religious, public, and private school education located in the nine San Francisco Bay Area counties. (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma).

Funder: Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation.

Applicant: Nonprofit organizations.

Amount: The foundation doesn’t offer recommendations for funding amounts.  It suggests that applicants request an amount that they feel is appropriate for their project and organization.

Teaching Tolerance Diverse Democracy Grants    

Purpose: To fund projects that involve students in non-partisan voter registration and turnout efforts.  Apply for this grant if you have a project that will help students become empowered voting advocates in their communities or one that encourages older high school students to register and vote.

Funder: Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Applicant: Educators who work in the United States based public or private K-12 spaces, as well as in alternative schools, therapeutic schools and juvenile justice facilities. 

Amount: Grant awards range from $500 to $5,000 for classroom or school projects and up to $10,000 for projects on the district level.

Deadline:  Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until August 31, 2018.

2018 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge 

Purpose: The challenge is a free online reading program designed to help students turn the “summer slide” the learning loss which can occur over the summer months – into a “summer leap” by discovering the job and magic of reading for fun.  The 2018 theme is “A Magical Summer of Reading.” 

Funder:  Scholastic, Inc.

Applicant: All students in the United States, territories and the District of Columbia. 

Amount: Recognition award.

Les Paul Music Grants 

Purpose: To support music-focused activities.   The foundation makes grants for music, music engineering, and sound programs for youth; medical research; programs related to hearing impairment; and public exhibits.  Previous grants were used to fund music camps, music and hearing programs and classroom projects.

Funder:  The Les Paul Foundation.

Applicant: Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations.   

Amount: Awards vary.

Deadline:  September 15 and January 15 annually.

Thank America’s Teachers Contest 

Purpose: To recognize educators for the great work they do every day to make us smarter.  Whether it is a teacher who went the extra mile for your kids or your now retired third grade teacher who taught you to believe in yourself, every person has a story of a teacher who made a positive difference in their life.  Share your heartfelt story and make a difference in their lives.  America’s thank-yous will have the power to help teachers deliver even more success for their classrooms, schools and communities.

Funder: Farmers Insurance Exchange and Adopt a Classroom. 

Applicant: Full-time, employed school teachers K-12 grade, who have been officially thanked at www.thankamericasteachers.com, who have not been a “THANK AMERICA’S TEACHERS” $2,500 contest winner, and who are legal residents of the United States. 

Amount: Grants up to $2,500.  The funds will be awarded to the teacher in his/her name through AdoptAClassroom.org.  180 teachers will receive $2,500 grants to fund projects in the classroom.

Deadlines:  February 27, May 30 and September 27, 2018.

Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grants  OPENS AUGUST 6TH!

Purpose:  To provide the tools to help educators and parent groups through educational challenges by providing the greatest impact.  Projects should fall into one of the following categories:  technology upgrades, tools for STEM programs, facility renovations and safety improvement.

Funder: Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF).

Applicant: Any individual public/charter K-12 school or non-profit parent group associated with that public/charter K-12 school.  Parent groups that are applying (PTO, PTA, etc) must have an independent EIN and official 501(c)(3) status from the IRS.  If your group does not have 501(c)(3) status, please apply through your school.  Pre-schools are not eligible. 

Amount: Grants range from $2,000 to $5,000.

Deadline: September 28, 2018.  Lowe’s reserves the right to close the application process if 1,500 applications are received.

Green Thumb Challenge Grant  NEW!        

Purpose:   To support the continued sustainability of an exceptional youth garden program that has demonstrated success, and has impacted the lives of kids and their community.  Submit chronicles of your garden project in a race to win the grand prize.

Funder: Green Education Foundation and Gardener’s Supply Company.

Applicant: Existing garden programs involving children currently in grades K-12, from schools and youth groups nationwide.  Please note that this grant is not for gardens that have not yet been started.

Amount: $500 award.

Target Field Trip Grants  NEW!          

Purpose:  Target funds programs that allow students and teachers to learn in all kinds of settings. Target funds field trips that connect students' classroom curricula to out-of-school experiences.  Field trips must take place between January and the end of the school year, May or June, 2019.

Funder: Target Corporation.

Applicant: Educational professionals who are at least 18 years old and employed by an accredited K-12 public, private or charter school in the United States.  Educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals or classified staff of these institutions must be willing to plan and execute a field trip that will provide a demonstrable learning experience for students.

Amount:  Up to $700.

Deadline:  Applications are accepted August 1 through September 30, 2018.

Project Learning Tree (PLT) GreenWorks! Grants Program 

Purpose: To provide funding for environmental service-learning projects that link classroom learning to the real world.  Students implement an action project they help design to green their school or to improve an aspect of their neighborhood’s environment.  The projects provide opportunities for student leadership and partner students with their whole school, local businesses and community organizations, and natural resource professionals.  The funds can be used for students to implement recycling programs at their school, conserve water and energy, establish school gardens and outdoor classrooms, improve a forest, or restore a natural habitat, and more.

Funder: Project Learning Tree.  The projects must incorporate service learning, exemplify student voice, involve at least one community partner and secure at least 50% matching funds. (in-kind acceptable)

Applicant: Any organization, community group, nature center, museum, school, etc. that is based in the United States or U.S. Territories and that involves youth in environmental and/or conservation education.  To be eligible to apply for a grant, applicants must have attended a PLT workshop, either in-person or online, that provides training, lesson plans, and other resources to help integrate these projects and environmental education into your curriculum or youth programs. 

Amount: Grants up to $1,000.

Association of American Educators (AAE) Classroom Grants 

Purpose:  Classroom grants can be used for a variety of projects and materials, including, but not limited to books, software, calculators, math manipulatives, art supplies, audio-visual equipment, and lab materials.  Funds must be used within one year of the application deadline.

Funder: Association of American Educators. (AAE)

Applicant: Grants are available to full-time educators at public, private, other (homeschool, 501(c)(3) organizations) who have not received a scholarship or grant from AAE in the previous three grant cycles. (or 18 months).  Grants are competitive and AAE members received additional weight in the scoring rubric.

Amount: Up to $500.

Deadline:  October 1 and March 1, annually.

Junior ROTC Program Grants 

Purpose: To promote aerospace education throughout classrooms and units.  This is an opportunity to enhance your students’ ideas on how aerospace plays a prominent role in today’s and tomorrow’s society.

Funder: Air Force Association.

Applicant: Aerospace science instructors in K-12 classrooms.

Amount: Grants up to $250.

Deadline: Grants are issued Air Force twice a year.  October 10 and February 10.

National Education Association (NEA) Student Achievement Grants 

Purpose:  To help educators take the lead on a wide range of projects to improve student learning.  Funding may be used for resource materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, technology, or scholars-in-residence.  The foundation gives preference to projects that incorporate STEM and/or global learning.  It also strongly encourages education support professionals to apply for funding in any area.

Funder: The NEA Foundation

Applicant: Any practicing United States teacher, counselor, or education support professional employed by a public school, including public higher education institutions.  Applicants must be current members of the NEA.

Amount: Grants are awarded in amounts of $2,000 and $5,000.

National Education Association (NEA) Learning & Leadership Grants 

Purpose:  To support public school teachers, public education support professionals, and/or faculty and staff in public institutions of higher education for one of the following two purposes:  Grants to individuals fund participation in high-quality professional development experiences, such as summer institutes or action research; or grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, or mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment.  All professional development must improve practice, curriculum and student achievement. The foundation gives preference to proposals that incorporate STEM and/or global competence in their projects.

Funder: The NEA Foundation

Applicant:  Grants are available to current members of the National Education Association who are educators in public schools or public institutions of higher education. We especially encourage education support professionals to apply.  Education support professionals can be classified as: para-educators, school bus drivers, maintenance and custodial staff, food services staff, school nurses and student services workers, clerical and office assistants, school security officers, and technicians.

Amount: Grant amount are $2,000 and $5,000.  The $2,000 grant amount is for individuals and $5,000 is for groups engaged in collegial study.  Grant funds can be used for travel, room, meals, registration fees, materials, etc. for individual grants. For group grants, funds can be used for educator stipends, substitute fees, materials, travel, meals, etc.  Grant funds cannot be used to pay indirect costs, grant administration fees, salaries, conference fees for more than one person, or lobbying or religious purposes.

The Michael Davis Music is Revolution Mini-Grant   

Purpose: To implement, support and/or improve teachers’ abilities to provide quality education for their students.  Funds may be used for supplies, materials, equipment, transportation for a field trip and/or to bring a performer or musical group to the school. 

Funder: The Music is Revolution Foundation

Applicant: Public school teachers of children in grades K-12.  Students and/or parents may participate in the writing of the application.

Amount: Up to $500.

Deadline:  October 15, January 15 and April 15 annually.

Seeds for Education Grant Program

Shell Science Lab Challenge  NEW!

Purpose: To recognize outstanding middle and high school programs for their exemplary approaches to science lab instruction utilizing limited school and laboratory resources, and raise awareness and exposure of the outstanding work being done in the science education field.  The challenge will showcase the work of teachers, representing their schools, who submit innovative, replicable strategies to deliver quality lab experiences with limited equipment/resources, and award teachers/schools with additional tools, resources, and rich professional development opportunities needed to support high-quality science teaching and strengthen their existing capabilities.

Funder:  Shell Oil Company and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA).

Applicant:  Individual teachers or teams of teachers of science in grades 6-12, in the United States and Canada, representing their schools.  A teacher is limited to one application per year whether submitting as an individual or team applicant.  A school may submit an unlimited number of applications.

Amount: One grand prize winning school will receive a lab makeover support package valued at $20,000.  Four national finalist schools will each receive a lab makeover support package valued at $8,500.  18 district winner schools will each receive a lab makeover support package valued at $3,000.  Prizes include Shell cash grants, NSTA memberships, NSTA Learning Center subscriptions, support to attend NSTA Conferences on Science Education, and donated science lab equipment.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HRSA) offers a website on bullying for kids.  The site defines bullying and describes ways in which kids can stop or prevent bullying from occurring.  The definition includes cyber-bullying, and describes specific ways in which some children use e-mail, social networking or texting to bully other children.  An adult page on the site provides in-depth information and resources on bullying for parents, teachers, coaches, and other adults in contact with youth.  For more information, visit http://www.stopbullying.gov/

Launched by the University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science, Howtosmile.org, is an online collection of thousands of hands-on, interactive science and math activities dedicated to making learning exciting and engaging for everyone.  All the activities at the site are free and there is no subscription required.  The website brings together a consortium of science museums across the country to empower educators working with school-aged children in science, mathematics, engineering and technology.
